Location choices of Chinese greenfield investments across EU regions: the role of industry and country-of-origin agglomerations

The presence of Chinese multinational enterprises (MNEs) in Europe is on the rise, yet they concentrate specific regions. Traditional spatial explanations this clustering refer to co-location foreign and local firms same or related sectors (‘industry agglomeration’). Nonetheless, investors may also favour locations with a ethnic communities (‘country-of-origin We investigate combined role both agglomeration typologies by using data 1307 investments 176 NUTS-2 regions during period 2009–19. While agglomerations matter general, we find substitution effect country-of-origin offsetting benefits industry agglomeration.
